Preventing Accidents In Infants

Most efforts to prevent accidents at home are often perceived fetched by the parents. But in fact, the number of accidents often occurs in infants. Prevent now!

It is not kidding. The data shows the number of accidents in the house mostly occurs in children. In infants, most accidents occur from falls, scratches sharp objects, choking, gagging or accidentally ingesting drugs and chemicals are placed in any place. Predictably, such accidents are generally caused by negligence of the adults around them.

According to Dr. Sudjoko Kuswadji, MSc (OM) PKK, occupational health specialists, every accident that occurs in children at home is the responsibility of parents. "Therefore, children under five years old, basically can not to take care himself."

In America, he added, District Attorney or the public prosecutor will prosecute disability due to accidents at home. Because, due to the negligence of parents, their children death or injury.

In Indonesia, cases of child injuries and deaths due to accidents at home, rarely reported, certainly not brought to the court. Most cases also admitted by parents, are not expected due to their "negligence”, so that the children become victims.

"Most parents do not realize their baby can move quickly. They reach whatever near them. Plus their curiosity. If her mother left alone for a while, could be fatal," Djoko regret that practiced at International SOS Clinic, Jakarta. For example, mother and child sitting together at the dinner table. Suddenly the phone ringing and mother went to take a call. Soon, her child was screaming because splashed her mother's hot coffee.

If parents can anticipate things at home, that could injure their child, probably not many children who will become victims. Here are ways to anticipate danger at home, as suggested Sudjoko.

At a certain age, children are always put anything in his mouth. Be careful, could make it choke! Here are some things parents need to be done to prevent choking incident:
  • Keep children away from small items and toys that can be separated into smaller parts.
  • Buy toys appropriate baby skills. Provide toys for over 2 years old to the baby, really risky, because of its small size.
  • Keep larger children's toys away from the baby. Babies are always interested in a brightly colored object.
  • Teach your older child to always keep toys neatly in enclosed special box that has been provided.
  • Check regularly all toys that might be loose or broken. The separated part that could easily swallow.
  • Every time cleaning the floors, make sure nothing small objects left behind such as pins, coins, batteries, bottle caps, nails, paper clips, hair clips, rubber bands, and other small objects.
  • Avoid dressing full of buttons or accessories that easily drawn. When separated, can be swallowed by the baby.
  • Do not give out candy, popcorn, nuts, and small pieces of food or grain because it can make a baby choking, or objects that enter into the nose.
  • Always accompany every time baby eat. Do not feed while he was playing, crawling or learning to walk.
OFTEN happens babies who have started to walk alone or child drowning in a swimming pool owned by his parents. This is because the lack of supervision when the baby playing around near swimming pool. In order to avoid the danger of drowning, this is what parents need to be.
  • Use a bucket and water that the same size as baby age. Never leave a baby alone for a moment near the bathtub.
  • Always dispose of water in the bath-up every time after using it. When the bath was filling-up, close the bathroom door. If necessary, lock it to prevent your baby to crawl in.
  • Around the pools should be given a safety fence and gate to the pool should always locked.
  • Always keep an eye your child when he near water, although in a special pool for him though.
  • Do not over ambitious to teach babies to swim from an early age in public pools. The most recommended age is three years because her immune system is more robust in the face of parasites and bacteria that may exist in public pools. Besides, if taught too early, parents usually "oversimplify"; so your child is able to float or swim a little, he thought it was safe but not necessarily. Later, if you want to put the child to the swimming course, choose certified and trained teachers to teach toddlers.
A common, their child electrocuted because insert metal objects into socket. Shock hazard can be avoided by following ways:
  • We must be diligent in checking every electrical cables and socket in the house. If there are cables peeling, immediately replace with a new cable. Replace socket with a closed model or outlet. For example, should rotate first if you want to use.
  • Close the socket with heavy furniture items that cannot easily be shifted.
  • Avoid electrical appliances such as mixer or ironing with wires dangling out of the reach of children.
BABIES have thinner skin than children and adults. Their skin is more susceptible to injury when exposed to flame or something hot splashed. What often happens, the mother makes milk while still holding her baby. The danger, if the baby struggling, then the milk bottle containing warm water would have shaken until the water can flush the baby. What made us not feel hot, make the baby can cause red skin like scalded.
Do following steps to avoid risk of fire or exposed to water and hot objects:
  • Always test first heat of the water used to brew milk or bathing the baby
  • You're enjoying coffee or tea, avoid while holding baby
  • Never holding a baby when you are cooking. Babies can pull up the pot or thrashing that makes your concentration divided
  • Never holding a baby when you are ironing
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of your child
OFTEN happens, the baby fell out of baby taffel or bed, either his bed or his parents. In order for your child not to fall off, parents should:
  • Not letting the baby (especially those who have to stomach and crawling) alone for one moment when he was in bed, baby taffel, sofa or chair.
  • Attach a safety fence on the staircase leading upstairs.
  • Attach a safety rope in infant seats, strollers, high chairs and other equipment that has a safety strap. Although only left to make milk or take a call, still attach a safety rope.
  • If the baby is able to stand, remove the bumper (a safety cushion) from his bed because would put in to climb.
  • Do not use baby walkers. This causes the baby often falls. If the legs can pedal, baby walkers can be raced. Well, the injuries usually occur because falls tumbling or crashing other objects in home.
